Matt, I believe that if you make a statement that Dunleavy completely misunderstands Martin Luther Kings message, it is incumbent upon you to say what that message is and what Dunleavy stated misunderstanding of what that message is. I have no doubt that Dunleavy hasn't the faintest idea what MLK messages are on any thing or that he would be able to coherently summarize MLK's statement, but you please do. Kathrin McCarthy
What Dunleavy said on Monday was that Dr. King's message was about "unity" with a claim that anyone suggesting that Dr. King supported anything else is just spin. It's white washing much of what Dr. King had to say about the need to address the systemic inequalities in our society as a key part of addressing racism. It wasn't about "unity" in the country but addressing things like economic injustice: “We all too often have socialism for the rich and rugged free market capitalism for the poor.” “White Americans must recognize that justice for black people cannot be achieved without radical changes in the structure of our society...The evils of capitalism are as real as the evils of militarism and racism." He advocated for significant and radical changes to how wealth is distributed in this country, calling for a concerted investment in the education and opportunity in communities of color.
For Dunleavy to not just ignore that part of Dr. King's message but to deny it and deny it in a speech where he also called for funding to purge voter rolls and refused to support an income tax (a more progressive and fair approach than cutting the PFD, as Brad Keithley is keen on reminding us) was galling.
Thank you Matt! I believe that Dunleavy is incapable of responding to the real message from Dr. King that calls for justice, addressing systemic inequality on so many levels and the many levels and forms that racism takes in the US. Dunleavy's denying of MLK as he advocates to purge voter rolls and his refusal to even talk about a progressive income tax is for me more than galling. It is sickening. I refuse to let this guy get to me however and I am more energized than ever to do every thing I can to see him un-elected and out of office this year. Kathrin
